As parents, it is only natural for us to want the best for our children’s future. We try to give the next generation the best possible life, and we wish for them to be safe, healthy, and happy. While many things are not within our control, some things are, and we can do something about it. It is up to us to do our part in making the world a better place for the decades to come.
Here are some ways you can help:
1. Reduce transportation footprint
Whenever possible, take public transport or gather some friends to carpool – this applies to both you and your children! Whether you’re off to the mall or the market or arranging your children’s commute to and from school, you will get to save on fuel and lessen air pollution when you or your children are sharing a ride with your neighbours.
2. Add more plant-based foods to your dishes
Diversify your diet by adding plant-based foods into meals and reduce your meat intake. Not only will your family consume more nutrition, at the same time, you can reduce the environmental impact of your food supply. Some easily accessible ingredients which are rich in protein, vitamins, zinc, and more include wild rice, okra, laver seaweed, sweet potato, broad beans, and red cabbage. So, the next time you cook a dish like Crunchy Vegetable Stir-Fry, consider adding in okra as it’s rich in Vitamin K and Vitamin C. 3. Reduce plastic use
Teach your children to be more mindful of their use of plastics. It’s great news that restaurants are no longer using plastic straws, but we can do more. One habit we can practice is to bring a reusable bag whenever you’re out shopping and bringing your own food containers if you plan on getting takeaway. These little changes go a long way in helping ensure a cleaner environment in the future.
4. Set screen-free times
Emphasise the importance of spending life off-screen early on. This will ensure your kids are able to appreciate other things in life, such as spending time with family or going out for an afternoon surrounded by nature. In the long run, this can help build better habits and better health.
5. Practice kindness daily
Kindness doesn’t require a grand gesture. It can be as simple as paying someone a compliment or giving your seat on the train to someone who needs it more. Be a good example to your little ones by being kind to others. This will encourage the next generation to uphold the same values, spreading love and acceptance of others.
A better future for our children begins with what we do in the present. Which change will you start adopting today?
